Fluid–Structure Interaction (FSI) Analysis of Composite UAVs
Apr.10,2024

【 Background 】

Since unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) do not need to carry personnel, their structures can be significantly lightweighted to increase payload capacity. Applying traditional manned aircraft design to UAVs often results in overly conservative structures. Additionally, UAVs contain a much higher proportion of composite materials, making CAE analysis essential to meet both strength and weight requirements for composite structures.

【 Results 】

Using fluid–structure interaction (FSI) techniques, more accurate aerodynamic loads on the UAV body were obtained. The structural analysis evaluated failure indices for each composite ply layer, enabling precise strength assessment. Ultimately, structural weight reduction was achieved while maintaining required strength.
