Structural Strength Analysis of Outdoor Art Installations|HyperWorks
Apr.10,2024

【 Background 】

The client of this project is Taipei Veterans General Hospital, regarding its outdoor public art installation “Flower of Life.” Considering that the original structure might face risks under wind loads, CAE analysis was requested to predict potential structural issues and allow improvement.
•    Current challenge: The outdoor metal installation features a relatively thin structure, which may experience resonance or local stress concentration under wind, affecting safety and stability.
•    Project goal: Enhance structural strength and verify wind-load resistance without altering the original appearance.

【 Technical Highlights 】

We applied Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis to simulate typical typhoon-level wind conditions and identify potential weak points in the structure. After reinforcement design and verification, a full structural upgrade of “Flower of Life” was completed.

【 Results 】

On August 7, 2015, Typhoon Soudelor struck northern Taiwan with gusts exceeding level 13. Many nearby art installations collapsed or were severely damaged, yet the “Flower of Life” remained standing strong and completely intact.
